Proper Flag Handling

Flag Day and Independence Day are special days for all Americans to take a moment and remember what our flag represents. Our flag represents hope and independence for our nation and the world. Our nation and flag have been through many trials over the last couple centuries. Many brave men and woman have died to uphold the freedom that we American’s have in our daily lives. Without our flag and our nation we would not be a free people and that’s what sets us apart from the rest of the world.

WE ARE THE MOST INDEPENDENT NATION whether you believe it or not.

As Americans, we have every right to be proud of our nation, culture and our flag. So raise your flags everyday and be proud to be a part of the most independent nation!

The proper way to display an American flag:

The flag should be treated with respect, just like you would treat, say.... your grandma, grandpa, mother or father! Seriously, you wouldn’t leave them in the rain or outside over night would you? That is why the flag is referred to as “Old Glory” because it represents all of us past, present and future and we gained our glory through many wars and “Old Glory” has seen it ALL.

Use the following list below for the proper treatment of your American flag:

  • The flag should be out from sunrise to sunset...
  • At sunrise, the flag should be raised fast and with concise regimented movements. At sunset, it should be lowered slowly. The action of raising and lowering the flag should be viewed as a ceremony.
  • The flag should not be up at night unless illuminated.
  • Be sure to take your flag down in inclement weather and high winds (it also helps the life of your flag so it doesn’t get damaged)
  • In the aftermath of a tragedy, the flag is to be raised to half staff for thirty days.
  • When flying the American flag with other flags (POW MIA or your state or another country) the American flag is always on top and the other flag flown below on the same pole.
  • The union is always on top. When displayed in print, the stars and blue field are always on the left.
  • The flag is never to touch the ground... NEVER. This is a big one for respecting the flag. If it is on the ground its because our nation has been defeated... last time I checked we’re still the best place to live and we’re still goin’ strong!
  • When storing your flag it is to be done properly with the folding procedure.
  • When your flag is old and tattered it is time to retire it. Old flags should be burned or buried. Please do not throw it in the trash. A local Boy Scout troop will have drop offs for you and they will do the ceremony properly for you.
  • I know the above rules may seem excessive but just realize the amount of blood, sweat and tears that have gone into this nation. It is only right that the symbol of this nation be treated with respect, even if you do not agree with certain politics. We should at least agree that if you live in this country, you should love it... respect it.
